Congratulations to the Cast and Support Crew of our All Charter play, “Get Your Kicks on Route Yellow Bricks!” And a huge shout out to our teacher and director/choreographer extraordinaire Amber Walker. There were 65 students in the production with ages spanning 5-16, and representation from all of the SLV Charter programs.  What a fabulous presentation!

There was definitely a stronger sense of classroom cohesion in every classroom I visited, and plenty of caring language between each other. The students' active and respectful listening is getting better, thus the classroom discussions are getting deeper and more thought-provoking. Quite nice.

Students were recognized at the November board meeting by Bruce McPherson and the SLVUSD school board members.  There were 1st-3rd place winners in 4, grade-level categories. WHAT WE DO IN OUR PROGRAMS: Lifeskills in Action: Recently all of our programs have deepened their focus on discussing Lifeskills in their classrooms. The Nature Academy established these Lifeskills as an integral part of their program, linking them into their academic studies and student self-reflections since the program’s inception over 20 years ago.  There is sound research that verifies the benefits of incorporating Lifeskills into students learning.

...We know that for academics to stick, students need to feel Safe, Seen and Supported. They also need to have resilience, to have that ‘I Can’ capacity. That’s where the importance of having a Growth Mindset comes in.

I am sure that many of you have heard about Growth Mindset. It was brought into the limelight with research done by Carol Dweck’s research in 2006.  The Charter staff encourages students in the Growth versus Fixed Mindset in their classes. It is important that parents, too, understand the importance of supporting a growth mindset throughout your child’s life. If we all use the same language with our students, the messages are definitely more able to stick! 

Sometimes we forget that the teens and pre-teens need this message as much....
