Cabrillo College Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment/Outside Coursework for Credit

 

At SLVUSD, we want students to have the opportunity to pursue subjects or coursework that are not offered at their respective high schools. Community colleges (ie. Cabrillo) offer Dual Enrollment, where students can take courses that allow them to earn both high school and college credit.  All costs are covered including enrollment fees, books, and classroom materials. 

 

In order to take advantage of this opportunity, students must follow the process below: 

 

  1. Research courses interested in taking and develop a list of options to present to academic counselor 
    1. Go to the website of the community college where you would like to take a class. Check the Schedule of Classes. 
    2. Students are responsible for making sure courses are A-G approved if taking a course to satisfy one of the A-G requirements for application purposes. 
      1. Find the class that you identified on ASSIST.org (to ensure this class will transfer to the university you plan to attend)
  2. Schedule meeting with academic counselor to discuss options and select potential courses that fit their future goals/schedule needs 
    1. All core courses must be taken through SLVHS (English, Math, History, Science)
  3. Student completes SLVUSD Dual Enrollment Request Form and gets parent/guardian/caregiver signature 
  4. Student returns SLVUSD Dual Enrollment form to academic counselor for approval 
    1. All community college courses must be approved by your counselor prior to your enrollment

 

Each community college has its own form and process for registering for dual enrollment classes, so please make sure you read all instructions.

 

Once students have received approval to take a community college course, they need to provide their academic counselor with an official transcript at the end of the semester to have the course added to their high school transcript for credit. 

 

SLVUSD will allow for up to 40 credits to be used towards meeting graduation requirements. Students can exceed the 40 credits but it will be in addition to the 230 credits required to graduate from SLVUSD.
