About Quail Hollow Heartwood Homeschool
The Heartwood class is the TK–1st-grade learning enrichment at our Quail Hollow Hybrid-Homeschool Program. We work with homeschooled families to establish a joyful and engaging work plan tailored to each child and their development. We provide an enrichment class on campus two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15–12:15. We learn about how to be a part of a community of learning and build confidence by developing self-awareness and appreciation of our accomplishments. The class also provides the time and space for direct observation of children's work by an experienced educator who can bring that perspective to families and their child's work plan. Parent involvement is encouraged through regular parent meetings, weekly email correspondence, field trips, networking, and volunteer opportunities.
Children in class learn how to care for our Earth, our learning environment, our community, and ourselves. We do this in a variety of ways. We integrate social-emotional learning and awareness throughout our day through art, literature, math, social studies, music, gardening, and all other subject areas. The classroom is designed as a multiage/multilevel learning environment which allows children to work on different activities in a shared space. Our activities/materials are carefully selected and presented to meet a child at their level while giving them the opportunity and space to grow. As children demonstrate mastery at one level, the teacher can then show the child how to take the activity to a higher level, reducing or increasing the challenge based on the child's skillset regardless of the level of their peers. Children observe and inspire each other to try new work and can collaborate and guide each other to accomplish a task.
