Meet the Principal

Kerry le Roux

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting our website!  If you’re here, perhaps you are interested in one of our unique and innovative programs!  Charter schools by their very nature offer a different way of educating young people who may (or whose families may) be seeking an instructional program distinct from the traditional comprehensive model. SLVUSD Charter School offers six separate programs within our TK-12 school, each with a distinct approach and format.  (Click here to understand the programs at a glance.) Our teachers are here because they have a passion to teach and engage with their students and their families individually, with a deep respect for what best supports each child’s educational and personal growth. Our families are our essential partners who have chosen to enroll and who help us to build and maintain a nurturing school community.

A little about me:

I was born and raised in South Africa, where I began my teaching career as a high school English teacher and Guidance counselor.  My husband Ralph and I emigrated to the United States in 2000 along with our then 8-week-old son Aiden.  I started out teaching English at San Ramon Valley High in the East Bay.  After our daughter Maddy was born, we moved to Ben Lomond, where we’ve lived since 2004.  I continued teaching English through 2011 at Branham High School in Campbell, during which time I obtained a Masters in Educational Administration from San Jose State.  With my admin credential newly minted, I then stepped in for the second half of the school year as assistant principal at Hoover Middle School, followed by a year serving as AP at Union Middle School, both in San Jose. In 2013 I became principal at Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary in Soquel, where I served for five happy years before taking a program director position supporting secondary Special Education programs, charter programs, and alternative education for Pajaro Valley Unified.  Four years later I became principal at Aptos Junior High, but when the position of SLVUSD Charter School principal opened in 2023-24, the opportunity to serve the families of the Valley where we’ve made our home, and the school district where both of our children spent a wonderful 12 years, it was an opportunity too good to pass up. I am passionate about individualized learning; I believe inn the essential nature of the school/family connection; I am committed to balancing both academic and social-emotional learning and growth in our students, and I bring a wealth of experience working with and supporting talented teachers and staff across every grade level and discipline. I have loved every step of my journey in education, but the last three years working with students, families, and staff of this amazing school every day, have been my happiest yet!
