Charter News•February 12, 2023

Dear Charter Families,

This is a brief Charter News, wishing you all a nice three-day weekend as we have Monday, tomorrow off.

I am still appreciating the memories of our All-Charter play.  We have such talented students, and there were so many great voices so many memorable songs,, such fun characters, and cameo opportunities for all ages..even for our musicians that wanted to highlight their expertise.  The students learned so much in participating in the performance: demonstrating their personal best, patience, perseverance, effort, integrity, cooperation, friendship, pride, and joie de vivre.  Thanks again to all the parents, especially those who gave their support for so many performances, and to Amber Walker and her team for making it all possible.

In one of my previous Charter News emails, I wrote about how our staff works to develop the traits that we believe are most important to support the lifelong development of our children.  One that we go back to again and again through the year is the ability to empathize with others. It is a trait that needs to be nurtured in everyone, throughout all of our lives.  Our Social Emotional Learning committee received a variety of  resources during one of our most recent meetings and I am attaching them here for those of you who would like to learn more.

Empathy Resources for Families.

Thank you for sharing your children with us.

~Rhonda

Metro Bus Service will be FREE to all Students beginning March 1st

Starting on Wednesday, March 1st, all students in Santa Cruz County can ride the Metro Bus for free.

This Youth Ride Free program will be piloted for one year.  HIgh School students will be asked to show a student ID to the driver.   Those without one can get a special pass from their school or at the Pacific Station Customer Service window in Downtown Santa Cruz.

The year-long program, set to launch March 1, aims to increase access for riders in grades K-12 and also foster a familiarity with the public transportation system that local authorities are leaning into for future planning opportunities.
"Our local youth represent the future of transit and they need better access to METRO," said Santa Cruz METRO Board Chair Larry Pageler in a release. "This pilot program is a big step toward reducing barriers in ridership. A key goal for the Youth Ride Free program is to help develop lifelong transit riders, while meeting METRO's overall goal of increasing transit ridership.”
