Charter News•February 5, 2023

Dear Charter Families,

Congratulations to all the 70+ students who participated in our All Charter play!  I was able to watch it during the Friday afternoon performance and can say that I thought that each and every student gave it their all.  What a fun and memorable play.  Thanks so much Amber Walker for leading this play.  It is so great to have it back again as one of our All-Charter events that unites our students in such a dynamic way.  Where else can you see Kindergarteners-12th graders performing and having such a great experience together?  It is far from an easy task to manage that wide of an age range and have it come out so wonderfully.  And it couldn’t have happened without the support of her team for choreography and vocal coach along with a huge team of parents that worked tirelessly throughout the many weeks it took to pull it off through all the performances.

Since I last sent a Charter News email out, we had a fatal shooting at a residential home in Boulder Creek during a party over the weekend at the end of January.  This tragedy impacted many of our SLV students and families personally, and for others it resonated as another example of the fragile balance that can tip us back into uncertainty and/or trauma.  For the week directly after the event we kept a close watch on our students and had Jen Sims near the classrooms more than usual.  She led our staff in two special staff meetings this last week to share about the Neurosequential Model in Education.  We discussed ways in which being more aware of brain development and developmental trauma can help us learn how to apply that knowledge to work with students in and outside the classroom.  Throughout the years, the Charter staff has learned various ways to support our students through trauma-informed practices. This was just another way to think about supporting students as best as we can.  Learning new ideas and having the time to discuss together about best practices is important to us. Taking care of our students all starts with adults giving themselves sufficient self-care. Please take care of yourselves and tell us of any important information regarding extra support your child may need. I have attached some support information from Dr. Sabah at the end of this email that you may want to take a look at.

And another reminder on the importance of helping your child with their academics. Please help your child do their best by providing a specific time and place for them to do their school work at home.  Show them that you are their co-facilitator by looking at Schoology, Google Classroom, teacher emails, or their paperwork and helping them with questions or clarity when needed.  All of our programs have field excursions and special events each month. We want all students to know that their academic learning comes first. Help them when necessary and please contact your teacher if you have any questions.

Thank you for sharing your children with us.

~Rhonda

While we hope that all our large storms are behind us, Weather is always a variable when living in the mountains.  I have copied Ms. Shiermeyer’s last message below as it believe it is a good reminder.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER

As a reminder, when stormy weather is present, the Superintendent's Office initiates the Storm Team to check major roadways and schools for power. This activity generally takes place around 5:00 am prior to the start of school so that parents can be notified in a timely manner via an  "All Call" should there be adverse conditions that may impact the ability for schools to be open. The district attempts to make the "All Call" to families by 6:00am whenever possible. The information is also posted to the District website if power and internet are available.

Please make sure that your contact information is kept up to date with your child's school to ensure you are receiving important information from SLVUSD.
