4/23/24: Ciphers, passwords & games

Math Club notes for 4/23/24: Today we worked on various types of number and letter patterns in ciphers. The kids started off with a physical exercise skip-counting by 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s as they made their way through hula hoop targets. Next we played a version of pencil-and-paper Mastermind called "Bullseye and Close Calls," where they partnered up, with one player thinking of a number and the second trying to guess the number after a series of clues. After that, we took a look at cyphers, trying to decode a Scytale (a strip of something with writing on it that gets decoded when wrapped around something the right width). They also learned about other types of ciphers (symbolic Pigpen, and offset letters Caesar) and shared ones they made up, i.e. one with backwards letter order, or one based on letter number order. Variety of voluntary fun activities to do together including math art, exposure to different kinds of logical games, county competitions if wanted - and snacks. At least two levels (2-3 & 4-5; TK-1 iff interest and parent volunteer), and we'll adjust based on who's there and what's working.
