Variety of voluntary fun activities to do together including math art, exposure to different kinds of logical games, county competitions if wanted - and snacks. At least two levels (2-3 & 4-5; TK-1 iff interest and parent volunteer), and we'll adjust based on who's there and what's working.

Math Club Notes 10/17: Geometry Continued
Part 1
Identification and definitions of different shapes handout (quadrilaterals: square, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid, rectangle; circle; equilateral triangles and isosceles triangles; polygons: octagon, decagon… googolgon). A square can be multiple things (rectangle, quadrilateral, etc.)
Word roots octa, hexa, googol etc express how many sides a shape has.
Attribute discussion of parallel lines (they don’t eventually cross), congruence (equal) sides, and angles (right, obtuse, and acute - what they look like). Different definitions for acute and obtuse, what they mean in math and in general conversation when describing thinking. Rotation of a shape doesn't change what a shape is.
Part 2 - Kids chose from following:
Building geometric shapes from pattern blocks, making new math art designs. Discussed Escher’s ‘infinity” art with repeating shapes.
Stretch Santa Cruz county sample competitions for Grade 5-6, expressing math formulas from a visual blocks sequence, plus trying out quiz sheets of double-digit addition w/ regrouping, multiplication.
Creating a new physical math game where kids are challenged with quick computation, and moving through sequence of hoops, like hopscotch. Kids can compete against their own time or do team relays. Level can vary.
