“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” ~Aristotle

This is the first All Charter Newsletter for the year. We are the school that supports educational options for students within and around the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District. We are a unique school in that we span two campuses, seven programs, with one satellite program located in Soquel.

The purpose of this newsletter is to keep families informed about events and activities that pertain to all program; such as Board updates, WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan), All-Charter events, and other pertinent information.  It is also the newsletter for the general public to find out some specifics about all the individual programs we serve. We will be sending this newsletter out every other week.

You will be receiving regular emails from the teacher(s) of your specific program to keep you updated on homework, classroom activities and specifics on field trips and special events for your child.  We have a great group of teachers who are dedicated to their profession and passionate about doing all that they can to make each year the best it can be for the families we serve.  They are excited to try new techniques and strategies in teaching when they know it will benefit the learning experience for the students.  I am sure you have already noticed the dedication and creative flair that makes your program the right choice for you and your child.  Look for more collaboration and technology opportunities happening throughout the Charter.

As the principal, I have the honor of overseeing the educational programming for the school. As you know, we offer the same curriculum, but our formatting and strategies of implementation are different.   It is always a privilege for me to walk from program to program and see our students happy and engaged, working and learning with their teachers.  It was great to see the collaboration, comfort level, and eagerness to be back together so evident these first two weeks of school.

We also have a great Administration Team that supports all programs, teachers, and students.  There may be only three of us, but we have become (nearly) masters at juggling and multi-tasking, so that we can give the best support we can. Roberta and I are the go-to people if you have questions or concerns. Holly, as our new registrar is the initial person to talk to about enrollment.

Thrill the World-2014!

Led by Charter Teacher - Amber Walker: This will be our 4th year representing the SLVUSD Charter School in this event! Funky Zombies all over the globe are already planning for Thrill The World 2014! The event was founded in 2006 in Toronto, and has now spread to six continents. Every October people in cities around the world dance to "Thriller" at exactly the same time in their corresponding time zone. Preparation and counting down worldwide is part of the fun, but the feeling of being connected to others and dancing together as one is a Thrill like no other! Celebrating the truly inspirational genius of Michael Jackson in a living and moving way is what keeps people coming back year after year. This year the event will be held in Santa Cruz on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Those of you who have participated previously may come for just the final two classes.
